2021 Estate Shiraz

VINTAGE 2021 was the first year of a La Niña cycle - cold, wet and long. Heavy rainfall in spring following a full soil recovery program through 2020 as the drought broke left the vines in fantastic condition for a slow and steady ripening season. The reds from 2021 are elegant and complex, while the whites are aromatic and lifted.

VARIETY While Huntington Cabernet leads the way in the Trophy and Medal tally, it is Huntington Shiraz that often wins the hearts of our customers. As smooth and as fruity as you’d expect from the variety; the fine tannins are well managed to provide structure and length as well as the ability to age. Mudgee produces outstanding Shiraz in both the warm and cool years.

WINEMAKING 15T of fruit received from Block 10 on 18/03/2021 at 13.4Bé. 11 days on skins; pressed dry (-0.6Bé). 14 months in a mix of well-seasoned French and American oak. Bottled 20/10/2022 at 13.91% alc/vol.

IN NOSE Juicy cherry and blackberry, vanillin creaminess. Hints of violet and very delicate white pepper. Smooth and fruity.

IN MOUTH Juicy red and black fruits - cherry, blackberry, mulberry. Fine grained, slightly chalky tannins. Complex and moreish with fantastic structure. Dark chocolate and bitter espresso on the long, long finish with a nice sharp hint of pepper. Silky without losing richness.

94/100 "Robust  both in the generous upfront fruit and tannin components, it delivers immediate appeal both in aromas and palate grip. The fruit profile is of blackberries, plums and a hint of leather. These attributes are delivered with typical Mudgee muscularity and grunt. This 2021 Estate Shiraz is generous, punchy and earthy, albeit with a supportive framework of glycerol warmth and mid-palate astringency. It would show further integration with some cellaring."
