2019 Huntington Estate Special Reserve Chardonnay
Elegant, smooth quality.
VINTAGE The white wines from 2019 are full flavoured thanks to a vintage marked by drought. Our old vines stood up well to the dry conditions thanks to our bore-based irrigation system. This ensured excellent leaf canopy and shading through the fruit ripening part of the season. White grapes were picked fully ripe with strong flavours, sugar and acid levels. The Chardonnay wines are peachy with strong acid structures, while the Semillon wines show elegant citrus characters with a crisp structure.
VARIETY In the early ‘80s, when Mateus reigned supreme, Huntington Estate launched one of Australia’s first dry rosés and it’s been a firm favourite with our customers ever since. The Australian Chardonnay story began in Mudgee, with local Alf Kurtz growing unidentified Chardonnay cuttings taken from James Busby’s original collection. In the early 1970s, wine from the Kurtz grapes was made and labelled as Australia’s first Chardonnay. Chardonnay goes in and out of fashion, but with multiple plantings on different soil types, altitude and orientation, dating back to the mid ‘70s, our love affair with the King of White Wines is enduring and true.
IN NOSE Enticing aromas and flavours of apple and pear
IN MOUTH The intent behind this reserve wine is to make a complex, structured, textural expression of Chardonnay. Gloriously soft and creamy wine with its long, firm finish and enticing aromas and flavours of cashew, apple, pear and a hint of stone fruit.
CELLAR until 2029+
93/100 "There's a wonderful consistency about the Huntington Estate Chardonnay releases. More concentrated than the Barrel Fermented 2019 release, there's some old school pleasure to embrace. Spare a thought for these guys too. Due to horrific smoke taint damage impacting their fruit, they dropped all 100 tonnes of their 2020 harvest on the ground. All of it. The kicker is that the closest fire ground was 100km away. Heartbreaking. Family run, here's a business worth rallying around in these tough times as you won't see a 2020 Chardonnay release, let alone any 2020 wine from them in the future. This Chardonnay is all yellow peaches and nectarines. Vanilla cream saunters through with ease as do touches of caramel before a surge of lemon on close. A wonderfully weighted wine which fills the mouth and is sure to please. Drink to eight years+" QWINE 2020
93/100 "A more concentrated and precise wine than the Estate release that is a little more tightly wound and shows more impact of fine french oak; the nose has attractive vanilla and flint with white peach and fig the fruit influence. The palate has worked peach that gives enjoyable mouth feel, acidity provides structure and persistence that is sure to underwrite continual development over the medium term. The finish has green fig to stone fruits and lemon with excellent length." THE WINE REVIEWER 2020
92/100 "Comes across full, not quite buttery, something like lemon butter. Hints of grilled nut oak in support, stonefruit gloss. Adding up to an up and at you aromatic profile. Voluptuous, textural, rolls across the palate, nigh chewy, touches of nougat; a wine to stop and consider. It's balanced, although you wouldn't necessarily consider it a delicate wine. It's fullness - and volume - seemingly command attention. Good wine, generous to a tee." THE VINSOMNIAC 2020
91/100 "Attractive creamy and buttery armoas, yeast lees contact, clean and fresh and this translates well to the palate, which is bright and fresh and crisp, with restrained and refreshing acidity. Lemony. Good balance and length, oak pleasingly unobtrusive." HUON HOOKE 2020
"The intense stonefruit aromatics make it difficult to move on to tasting it. Gee it’s good on the nose. The palate is then swathed in rich, inviting, chardonnay characters. Peaches, a hint of pears and nectarines start things off as a lovely creamy texture spreads everything across the palate, and then smooth acidity shows up as it peters out to an excellent length. Even in its youth, all of the components seem to have come together beautifully. An absolute pleasure to drink." WORDS FROM A WINEGLASS 2020
