2018 Huntington Estate Special Reserve Semillon
Crisp and refreshing.
VINTAGE A great vintage. Good rains during last winter ensured a full soil moisture profile. Consistent weather until late Summer also helped the vines gain strength to settle for a couple of hot spells just before ripening which was marked by ideal dry conditions.
VARIETY This is the 4th release of our Special Reserve Semillon, with 18 months of bottle age to allow the wine to begin to soften naturally (the 2019 Reserve is performing really well in shows at the moment, but is a bit fierce to really enjoy yet!). It’s a palate-driven wine-style I love to drink, and I’m really enjoying experimenting with different winemaking techniques and learning about what our fruit can do.
WINEMAKING Fruit from the north end of Block 6 – our best – was picked early in the season to optimise acids and for a leaner, more lemony fruit character. Winemaking intervention was minimal. Free-run juice only (no pressings) to reduce phenolics, was slowly fermented at a very low temperature to preserve fruit character and elegance. We deployed a very light touch with fining, filtration and stabilisation to amplify the beauty of the fruit.
IN NOSE Citrus, lychee and nashi pear with gentle grassy characters.
IN MOUTH Silky smooth and elegant wine with great balance and length. The fruit character is very pure with lovely lemon drop aromas and flavour, supported by a hint of minerality / river stone.
CELLAR until 2028+
92/100 "Preserved lemon meets something like Canteloupe melon. It's certainly that citrus vibe, supplemented with a tropical edge. There's a waxy, textural feel across the palate, slip and slide movement that lends a sensuous sway to proceedings. It's all free run juice - the juice extracted when berries split under their own weight, before pressing - to minimise phenolics, which is my take on the feel and flow of the wine. There's an energetic vibe to things, a cut and thrust of acidity that probes to the far reaches of the palate, giving lasting length and presence." THE VINSOMNIAC 2020
92/100 "Toast, saffron and clotted cream are melded with striking lemon curd and lime on the nose, the palate has a litheness of acidity that is built around citrus fruits with time in bottle already affording some flint and toasty characters. The finish is saturated in fresh lime with a faint twist of lanolin. One to put in the cellar for a decade." THE WINE REVIEWER 2020
91/100 "Made to age, it's early days here for a wine getting into its work. Quite a composed wine, key lime pie, almonds and a faint toast can be seen. The acid still has a spring in its step but hold on to this for a few years yet and it should calm down. Patience is all the go here - a wine I'd be keen to see in three to five years. Drink 2022 to ten years+" QWINE 2020
"The nose gets WOW number 1 for this wine! Like the 2019, it’s citrusy but with more complexity and a dried herb like character poking out amongst it all. The second WOW for this wine belongs to the palate! Plenty of flavour to get your tongue and gums around. There’s lemons and limes (I know what you’re thinking but it’s different to ‘that’ white variety) and it might come as a surprise but there’s texture there too. A lovely long dry finish where the acid sings just tops it off for me. This is a purely delightful Semillon. Respectworthy, ageworthy and yumworthy too!" WORDS FROM A WINEGLASS 2020
