2017 Special Reserve Shiraz
Soft, juicy and luscious
VINTAGE 2017 was warm and dry - a great red vintage, and the culmination of a huge amount of work to better understand how to manage the warmer seasons in the vineyard and the winery. The promise of the wines was evident from the start in the colour and chemistry (pH, acids etc.) and the flavours and structure followed through.
VARIETY While Huntington Cabernet leads the way in the Trophy and Medal tally, it is Huntington Shiraz that often wins the hearts of our customers. As smooth and as fruity as you’d expect from the variety; the fine tannins are well managed to provide structure and length as well as the ability to age. Mudgee produces outstanding Shiraz in both the warm and cool years.
WINEMAKING / VINEYARD Fruit from Block 2a and 2b was picked 24/02/17 at 13.8 Baumé, sat on skins for 6 days, racked to American Oak barrels 20% new, 30% 2nd use, the remainder 3rd and 4th use. Bottled 3/10/18 at 14.4% Alc.
TASTING NOTE Deep purple/red in colour, this wine is fruit forward with dark plum, blueberry and warm and sweet spices. Notes of crème brûlée complement the lush fruit. The palate is soft, supple, smooth and long.
94/100 "Deep, bright colour; full-bodied, overflowing with luscious purple and black fruits and lashings of oak. Finesse is not part of the landscape, this in no need of it. What it does need is time." HALLIDAY 2019
