2016 Special Reserve Shiraz
Dark, rich and broody.
VINTAGE: The 2016 was one of those vintages where everything falls into place – the weather, the timing, the yields and the flavours all hit the sweet spot. A cool, wet start to the season with a great lift of warmth throughout vintage. A steady ripening period with timely rain produced high quality fruit with great acid and flavour.
VARIETY While Huntington Cabernet leads the way in the Trophy and Medal tally, it is Huntington Shiraz that often wins the hearts of our customers. As smooth and as fruity as you’d expect from the variety; the fine tannins are well managed to provide structure and length as well as the ability to age. Mudgee produces outstanding Shiraz in both the warm and cool years.
WINEMAKING Fruit from the fifty year old vines of Block 2a was picked, cold soaked for 48 hours and fermented on skins for 11 days, and then spent 20 months in a selection of 25% new American oak barriques.
IN NOSE Plum and cherry with a hint of toasted coconut notes.
IN MOUTH Dark plum with cherry and red fruits. Generous and rich with fleshy tannins and classic peppery finish.
DRINK WITH Drunken duck à l'orange.
"94 POINTS Super sweet fruit, a real warmth to the profile, malty/minty oak and choc/coconut notes too. It's hard not to think of iced vovos when you drink this, but for generosity of flavour it takes some beating" HALLIDAY, Dec 2019
