VINTAGE This is the 5th vintage of our ‘Amarone’ style shiraz. A small parcel of hand-picked grapes is ripened off-vine in baskets to amplify certain flavours and ramp up intensity overall – aiming for Barossa-like generosity and ‘bigness’. The style has been a critical success, ‘wholly successful’ by Halliday, and we’ve just been awarded our 3rd trophy for the series – a Museum Trophy for the Most Outstanding Museum Red for the 2011 (which is drinking like a dream, if you’ve got any, treat yourself!).
VARIETY Over the years, Chief Winemaker Tim Stevens observed a floral, peppery character in Shiraz grapes before they fully ripened that was lost when they were ready to pick. A desire to capture this flavour, combined with his ambition to produce big, ‘ballsy’ Shirazes of the kind that the Barossa excels at, led him to experiment with the Amarone style of wine making. Halliday judged the endeavour “wholly successful”.
WINEMAKING 1.8T of fruit from Block 2B (usually our Special Reserve fruit) was hand-picked very early in the season on the 27th January at 10.4 Baume, then ripened in baskets for 2 ½ weeks until it reached 14.2 Baumé. 8 days on skins in open fermenter then put into 2nd use, 3rd and 4th use AP John American oak barriques. Just 800L / 1036 bottles produced.
IN NOSE Red and blue berries, rose and cinnamon.
IN MOUTH Jam packed with blueberries, plum and blackberries, with white pepper spice and rich florals. So many gorgeous flavours that come together in perfect harmony. Balanced, soft, fine tannins, great length. A wine to savour.
95 POINTS "The wine is made in the Amarone style with the grapes dried to reduce the amount of water in the berries and accentuate the concentration of the grapes. This is a winemaking technique that takes both time and introduces risk into the winemaking process, so it’s pretty exciting when it comes off. Inky dark red with a cacophony of aromatics with milk chocolate, vanilla bean, luxurious plum and richness of tar and roses. Even though the wine comes in at 15.5 % the balance is impeccable. Tannins are drying with a bitter dark chocolate edge and lines of acidity that not only gives structure but will underwrite future development. Oak provides a creaminess to the wine and layers of spice to unbridled dark berry fruits that have immense concentration to finish." The Wine Reviewer, winereviewer.com.au, May 2019
94 POINTS "Deep brooding intense and spice filled it is a big red wine from beginning to end..." PaulIppolito.com.au
94 POINTS "A beautiful Amarone style wine from Mudgee's Huntington Estate. Dense and concentrated, it's loaded with fruit cake and dried fruit filling the mouth. Orange peel lines the flank with cedar and a sprinkle of dried herbs by its side. Firm tannins are still evident even after a few days of tasting, but this is in no rush to go anywhere. Caramel and warming spices tingle through the mouth on a long and luxurious finish. Yes please! Drink from 2021 to ten years+" QWine, June 2019
18.25/20 POINTS "Opaque garnet in the glass. Rich and deep fruit cake aromas: a veritable shelf rack of spices with distinct prune and pine notes. Full bodied. Shows depth and concentrated lines of fresh berry fruit balanced with dried fruits and baking spices and pepper. Long, long flavour profile which eventually drifts through to earthy mocha. The tannins are supportive and firm without being astringent from extract and artifice. A cellar worthy item for many years ahead." Vinonotebook, March 2020
"Made using the Italian "Amarone" method of partially drying the grapes before fermenting, this is a big wine. The aromas of plums, florals & dried herbs burst out of the glass, masses of big concentrated flavours with lovely pepper notes, becoming quite complex & has a tight lingering finish. BELLISSIMO !!" Wine Assist, Dan Traucki, May 2019
"Winemaker Tim Stevens handharvested a tiny parcel of premium Mudgee grapes early in vintage and basket-dried them in the amarone method, gradually concentrating the sugars and flavours. The result is an outstanding dry red with oodles of rich floral, fruity and peppery flavours — and the birth of a new premium red for Huntington Estate. Drink with prime beef." ★★★★ RECOMMENDED "The dark berry, oak and prune aromas almost form a wall. If your thing is medium-bodied red, don’t buy this one. It’s a big firm number that showed well after four days’ breathing, but it needs plenty of cellaring time." Winewise Magazine, June 2019
"Another powerhouse cracker Basket-Dried Shiraz from Huntington Estate and Tim Stevens' winemaking team. With already 3 years of development, this "Amarone" style Shiraz immediately teases the senses with sweet red fruit, mixed herbs, mocha & black pepper both on the nose and front palate. Wafts of floralness add intrigue and interest. This tightly structured, fine-grained, premium Shiraz reflects the grippy yet smooth expression of varietal regionality and winemaking technique. The muscular 15.5% Alc is supported by the well-balanced massaging of fine tannins, grippy acid and fruit primacy. Currently not one for the faint-hearted, this thumping Shiraz, which will continue to evolve and please over the next few years, is a good match to brawny protein dishes." The Grape Hunter, Gilbert Labour, June 2019
