2014 Huntington Estate Special Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

VINTAGE 2014 was a warm and dry year, which cooled for a slow and steady Cabernet ripening resulting in this big, bold quintessentially Australian Cabernet.
VARIETY Huntington’s reputation was built on Cabernet Sauvignon. Two blocks were planted at opposite ends of the vineyard in 1969, one (Block 3) at the highest point, the other (Block 9) at the lowest. The terroir (climate, soils) and winemaking at Huntington is perfect for this late-ripening, tannic grape.
WINEMAKING Fruit was picked from Block 9a of the Huntington Estate vineyard on 21/03/13 at 13.2 Baumé, cold-soaked for 3 days to bring out the fruit; fermented on skins for 10 days in an oak fermenter and then spent 18 months in 40% new French oak barriquess.
IN NOSE Dark cherry and black current with an edge of varietal dried herbs and tobacco.
IN MOUTH Red and blue fruits with a fresh, natural finish. Herbaceous notes with fennel and aniseed well balanced against dusty, finely integrated tannins for a long, savoury finish.
DRINK WITH Roast lamb.

94 POINTS "...This is a wine built to last. Ask winemaker Tim Stevens about tannins and his face beams. He loves a tannin chat and speaks glowingly about the Mudgee tannins so close to his heart. Minty and savoury characters glide through the mouth with ease. The oak is well balanced, and over a few days of tasting, longevity is certainly in its veins. Black olives, black fruits and some leathery tones fuse together with ease. Over a couple of days of tasting it relaxed and unfurled nicely yet the tannin grip still evident. Impressive.
