2013 Huntington Estate Block 3 Cabernet Sauvignon
Elegant and varietal with superfine tannins.
VINTAGE 2013 was a welcome return to more normal conditions after the cold wet years of 2011 and 2012. Those two years of rain set the vines up well, and both quality and yields were good, with a slow and steady ripening period.
VARIETY Huntington’s reputation was built on Cabernet Sauvignon, and the 50 year old vines of Block 3 produce some of the finest cabernet in NSW. Situated at the highest point of the vineyard, with lean soils of gravel over sand, the fruit is elegant, finely structured and herbaceous.
WINEMAKING Fruit from Block 3 was picked on the 20/03/13 at 12.8 Baumé, fermented on skins for 15 days in an open oak fermenter and then spent 18 months in 50% new French oak barriques and hogsheads.
IN NOSE Cassis and dark chocolate with a rich edge of cigar box.
IN MOUTH Dark fruited with notes of intense black cherry, cassis and hints of fennel and dried herb. Powerful and rich with savoury, fine-grained yet grippy tannins, this wine has a long finish and fresh natural acidity.
DRINK WITH Roast pork
CELLAR until 2033+
92/100 “Good colour; there is cohesion to the line and balance of the palate, with cassis prominent, running towards the finish where tannins and oak make their appearance.” James Halliday, Mar 2018
