2018 Huntington Estate Semillon
Elegant, balanced and silky smooth.
VINTAGE 2018 has been characterized by intensely dry heat spells followed by short, heavy rainfall. With a lot of hard work from our vineyard team, we picked our fruit very early to beat the heat and secured stunning, evenly ripened fruit with clean, restrained acids.
VARIETY Huntington’s flagship white grape, our Semillon is as age-worthy as those from our neighbours in the Hunter, but is more approachable when young thanks to a cooler, longer ripening period that allows us to preserve acids while better ripening the fruit. A Huntington Semillon is fresh, delicate and crisp.
WINEMAKING Fruit from Block 5 was picked early on the 08/02/18 at 11.3 Baumé. Cold ferment in stainless steel for 2 week ferment lees contact and early bottling.
IN NOSE Cool citrus with white flowers.
IN MOUTH Citrus driven. A long, perfectly balanced finish with fresh acidity and a crisp mineral edge. A textbook Semillon.
DRINK WITH Oysters and fresh prawns.
REVEWS & ACCOLADES
"91/100 Stalwart from Mudgee, with a stoic style. Ultra tart, linear, steely thread of white wine here. Needle thin with core of pulsing, intensly citrusy fruit flavour. Has a sense of ‘minerality’ to it, but really green, lean and firm is the current message. Hard to get into now, a bomb of naked acidity, but should yield well in future, a long way away. Drink : 2020 - 2030+" The Wine Front, Mike Bennie, 2018
"91/100 ...Bursting with lemons and lemon zest, it exudes freshness. Chill it hard and have with anything you like - seafood is the go without a doubt though. At the lunch, it was paired with ocean trout ballotine with cucumber, creme fraiche, horseradish and Avruga. A bucket of prawns would have been just as fine. Clean and crisp, its broad through the mouth. Lemon juice drips on the tongue with an edge of green apple. Light to taste, more time in the glass saw some grassy traits emerge. Great drinking in the sun. Drink now to three years." QWine, July 2018
"90/100 Bright apple, pear and lemon aromas with a floral lift; juicy, round and generous, extending long and lemony over a fine chalkiness; taut acids." Jeremy Oliver, Oct 2018
"This is another delightful flagship Huntington Estate Semillon under the White Label series. It is a well-structured, approachable drop from owner / winemaker Tim Stevens and team. It is packed full of primary aromas & flavours of ruby grapefruit with slight herbal / straw undertones. There is also a firm grip of jubey acid and astringency which will reward cellaring. Eminently enjoyable now, it will also develop and blossom over the next 5 - 8 years." The Grape Hunter, 2018
"I’ve long had a soft spot for this grape variety in Mudgee and it’s easy, on tasting this dry white, to justify the love. It’s crisp, full flavored and moreish — everything you’d ask for of a dry white. I quaffed a bottle on its own but it would also go well with salads and simple fish dishes that aren’t overly heavily sauced." PS News, John Rozentals, Sept 2018
"Fresh as anything can be when it’s virtually brand spanking new. This smells fresh, zippy, inviting and capable of brightening your day…seriously! It’s no different when tasting it. It seems light yet provides some texture for a bit of complexity, it’s lemony and appley and peary too. I am fan of the slight tang of the grapefruit acidity on the finish that makes you thirsty for more. When you see ones like this hitting the bottleshop shelves, I can’t understand why people don’t drink more Semillon!" Words from a Wineglass, 2018
"Young Semillon archetype with lemon aromas, spring blossoms and light yellow tropical melon. Lightly framed with snow pea green sprout tinges to lemon/lime citrus... A few years in bottle should let it all come together. Hold fast." Vinonotebook, Regan Drew 2018
"89/100 Grassy aromatics, tropical fruit hints sit calmly underneath, gently wafting their wares. Citrus, glace pineapple too. Straddles a line between fine and textural, has a bit of body, good line of acidity too. Clean and crisp, clipped palate." The Vinsomniac, 2018
