2017 Huntington Estate Special Reserve Chardonnay

VINTAGE In 2017, we can happily and honestly declare a truly great vintage.  Great rains during last winter ensured a full soil moisture profile. This period was also cool, meaning our wise and happy old vines were not under pressure to grow quickly. Consistent weather until late Summer also helped the vines gain strength to settle for a couple of savage heat waves just before ripening which was marked by dry conditions which are ideal.

VARIETY The Australian Chardonnay story began in Mudgee, with local Alf Kurtz growing unidentified Chardonnay cuttings taken from James Busby’s original collection. In the early 1970s, wine from the Kurtz grapes was made and labelled as Australia’s first Chardonnay. Chardonnay goes in and out of fashion, but with multiple plantings on different soil types, altitude and orientation, dating back to the mid ‘70s, our love affair with the King of White Wines is enduring and true.  

WINEMAKING Fruit from Block 17 was picked on 07/02/16 at 11.9 Baumé. Once crushed, the juice was settled in tank on lees, then transferred to a mix of new and 2 to 3 year old French oak barrels. 25% of the batch underwent wild fermentation. The wine spent 7 months in barrel, the lees gently stirred weekly before bottling in September 2017. 

IN NOSE Soft peach and stone fruits with nectarine and vanilla.

IN MOUTH  Peach and stone fruit with citrus and a hint of cashew. Light and delicate with mouth filling flavour and superb texture. Subtle minerality supports a long, balanced finish.

"93/100 Super smart Chardonnay. Some old school appeal but the elegance and smooth delivery cannot be denied. A great release for Chardy fans. Savour each sip. Soft barbecued peach, shades of caramel, whipped butter and vanilla. Beautifully weighted, the mouth is filled with ease. Elegantly textured, creaminess is drip fed on what seems a never-ending finish. A couple of more dollars has been tacked on this year but don't flinch at that - it's worth it. A light straw yellow in colour, the nose offers peach and melon with a hint of vanilla oak sitting nicely in the background. The palate is dry with ripe apricot, melon and nectarine flavours.
