2014 Huntington Estate Special Reserve Shiraz

AUD $45.00 inc. gst

Dark, rich and broody.

VINTAGE 2014 was a typically hot and dry Mudgee vintage, perfect for our Shiraz vines. Not dissimilar to the 2013 season, both quality and yields were good with a slow and steady ripening period.

VARIETY While Huntington Cabernet leads the way in the Trophy and Medal tally, it is Huntington Shiraz that often wins the hearts of our customers. As smooth and as fruity as you’d expect from the variety; the fine tannins are well managed to provide structure and length as well as the ability to age. Mudgee produces outstanding Shiraz in both the warm and cool years.

WINEMAKING Fruit from the fifty year old vines of Block 2a was picked on 10/02/14 at 14.3 Baumé, cold soaked for 48 hours and fermented on skins for 11 days, and then spent 20 months in a selection of 25% new American oak barriques.

IN NOSE Cedar, dark chocolate and a hint of coffee bean.

IN MOUTH Plum and rich dark fruit with a coffee and spice back palate. Fine, clean tannins are well integrated. Balanced with firm, excellent structure.

CELLAR 2024+

DRINK WITH Drunken duck à l'orange.

"5 Stars, 95/100 Deep, dark, dense purple/red colour and a toasty-oaky, sawn-timber aroma which soars over the top of chocolate cake and licorice aromas. The palate is massive and brawny with lashings of tannin, some astringency, noticeable acid and oak flavours. There's a lot of licorice and chocolate, too. A very big wine with lots of structure but also a fruit-sweet core. It's hard to assess today but will surely reward cellaring richly. (Trophies, best shiraz and best red wine, 2017 Mudgee Wine Show) .Huon Hooke, Apr 2018

"94+/100 Excellent red. Destined for the cellar. Sweet cherry-plum fruit flavours meet coffee grounds, earth, florals and smoky/cedary oak. Fresh-faced but substantial; great combination. Big pulls of tannin. Sturdy and pretty at once. Going places." Campbell Mattinson, Feb 2018

"94/100 On the back of a super impressive 2013 release comes this 2014 edition. Wow, another serious customer to show how Mudgee Shiraz is done right.  Dense and flavoursome - a Shiraz packing plenty. Black plums, dark chocolate with cloves effortlessly interwoven. Black fruits roll through from start to finish with consummate ease. Dutch cocoa is sprayed across the mouth with cinnamon, fine pepper and exotic spices for good measure. A mouth sapping dry finish urges another sip pronto, yet the urge needs to be fought off to savour the longevity as it plants itself refusing to leave. High fives all round for the Huntington crew.  Drink now for 10 years+" QWine, 2018

"91/100 Deep purple-crimson - really enticing colour and reveals the same palette with the fruit. Full-bodied, lots of cedary oak amongst the densely packed grippy tannins, pickled walnuts with sparky raspberry-like acidity, drying finish. Needs time." James Halliday, Wine Companion

"Judged 2017 Mudgee Wine Show’s best red, this multi-faceted shiraz has berry pastille scents, plush blood plum on the front palate, middle-palate mulberry, Turkish delight chocolate and savoury oak and spearminty tannins." John Lewis, Newcastle Herald, Jan 2018

"A big, gutsy red, that despite its $35-$40 price tag is actually very good bang for buck. This would sit comfortably alongside a lot of $80-$100 current release wines. It’s deep, dark and chewy, made unashamedly in that chest thumping, bravado style. Intense dark plum, dark chocolate and raisin notes. A little astringency in there, which will settle with 12 months in the bottle. Great wine." Weekend Post, BJ Foley 2018
