2013 Huntington Estate Special Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

AUD $42.00 inc. gst

Rich, ripe and spicy.

VINTAGE 2013 was a welcome return to more normal conditions after the cold wet years of 2011 and 2012. Those two years of rain set the vines up well for the warmth and both quality and yields were good, with a warm ripening.

VARIETY Huntington’s reputation was built on Cabernet Sauvignon. Two blocks were planted at opposite ends of the vineyard in 1969, one (Block 3) at the highest point, the other (Block 9) at the lowest. The terroir (climate, soils) and winemaking at Huntington is perfect for this late-ripening, tannic grape.

WINEMAKING Fruit was picked from Block 9a of the Huntington Estate vineyard on 21/03/13 at 13.2 Baumé, cold-soaked for 3 days to bring out the fruit; fermented on skins for 10 days in an oak fermenter and then spent 18 months in 40% new French oak barriquess.

IN NOSE Rich, ripe and rounded. A well-integrated mix of cassis and warm spice.

IN MOUTH An abundance of fruit – blackcurrant, blueberry and cherry, and a hint of mint and dark chocolate. Medium to full-bodied. Well-structured,  good length.

CELLAR 2030+

DRINK WITH Moroccan lamb.

"91/100  From Block 3 of the estate vineyard, planted in 1969. Very good volume of flavour. Blackcurrant, leather, iodine and mocha... It champions the future over the present." The Winefront, Campbell Mattinson

"It's a pleasure to drink an aged, rich Mudgee red with its cassis and blackcurrant fruit and restrained toasty oak - well priced too." Brisbane News, Mike Frost, June 2018

"9.2/10  These guys have got the five-year cab sav down pat, soft and rich... like a banker." Max Crus, Daily Examiner, April 2018

"92/100 A beautifully balanced Cabernet which will reward a sleep in a dark place. Generous Cabernet from Mudgee with all the trimmings you'd expect. Aromas flow neatly to the flavour profile. Smooth through the mouth, there's plenty of herbal highlights to walk beside rich dark fruit. Oak is well handled and the lick of vanilla on a long and moreish finish is a great parting gift. Drinking well now but fear not to age long." QWine, April 2018

"Lovely deep dense colour, great complex aromas with hints of pencil shavings & cassis. The palate is so smooth, generous and rich yet tightly structured with superb balance. Will continue to evolve over the next few years. OUTSTANDING." Dan Traucki, Wine Assist. April 2018

"Bravo to wineries such as Huntington Estate to hold back releases to showcase what semi-mature prospects they can be... All dark and earthy: fresh turned soil with boot polish over blackberry, cassis and raspberry. Bitter dark choc and coffee aromas provide a savoury foil with old mint tea. Rusticity continues on the palate with plentiful chewy, fine tannins supporting cherry and blackberry fruit. Feels comforting and reliable for those that like a bolder style that shows restraint by not bombing away with fruit. Good for now or the next 15 years." Vinonotebook, July 2018

"The winery’s straight cabernet has been a hallmark of Huntington from the very beginning, and this wine, released at five years of age, continues the tradition. The fully ripe fruit has created an amalgam of flavours that include dark berries and mint. These have been subtly interwoven with vanillin flavours derived from maturation in French oak." Oz Baby Boomers, John Rozentals, April 2018

"89/100  Firm, ripe and rustic, this rather polished cabernet marries bright cassis, dark berry and plum-like fruit with cedary oak and earthy, rather leathery complexity. There’s a depth of fruit bordering on raisined, and it’s clearly made in an older style with charm and character. Year to Drink:2021-2025" Jeremy Oliver, 2018
