Vintage: 2012 was very cold and wet – the kind of season where grapes are often picked unripe in a rush to beat disease resulting in green, astringent tannins and thin, weak wines. A combination of hard work in the vineyard, and patience and courage from the winemaker however, allowed us to get the grapes fully ripe and the tannins perfect for beautifully elegant, structured wines. The acid / pH balance, astringency and alcohol levels will preserve the fruit for longer than a normal year. Over time the wine will become softer and fuller, gaining flavour.
Vineyard / Winemaking: Amarone (Block 10).
Description: Rich, complex, a flavour bomb.
Aromas: Intoxicating nose of roses & violets, pepper, spice, hay, and black and red fruit.
Palate: Huge. Flavours as in nose. Clean, full bodied, ripe fruit, intense fruit and long, dry tannins.
Cellar: Save it if you can…10 to 15 years to let it round out.
Drink with: Good steak on a really special occasion!
95/100 “Picked at 11 baume and dried in baskets for 6 weeks. A very interesting and wholly successful Amarone style; because of the path it has taken, there are none of the confit/dead fruit characters that often stalk wines with this level of alcohol, instead there are savoury/licorice/bitter chocolate elements that all add to the appeal, and without any tannin penalty.” James Halliday
93/100. "No wallflower here! This packs quite a punch but in doing so manages to find great balance between its heady perfume, inky texture, deep, dark ripe flavours and swathe of splintery tannins. It rolls long, lip-smacking and with a chomp to finish. Good feel for its style." WBM Magazine, Mike Bennie, March 2017
95/100 "A very individual nose, in a way old fashioned or feral if one prefers that term. Deep and intense it’s quite something to linger over and smell the changes. In the mouth, it’s a full on style not big and jammy but more savoury Rhone style. At $65 I wouldn’t say this is for everyone but for those into wine its well worth it 95 points." The Key Report, Tony Keys, 2017
94/100 "Smells stewed and raisiny - would you believe me if I said horse hair? Dark fruits, dried purple flowers, dark chocolate, tinned plum and fruit cake presence in the mouth. Perhaps a wine not suited to everyone's liking, but those who love to indulge in Italian wines would gravitate to this with ease. Drink now to the long term." QWine, March 2017
"...It is inky purple and has 14.7 per cent alcohol and fruitcake aromas. The front palate shows rich plum flavour, the middle palate has loganberry, molasses, raisin and nutty oak and licorice- edged tannins play at the finish," Newcastle Herald, John Lewis, Dec 2016
"Soft plum and red berry aromas. On the palate smooth, rich delicious and big porty flavours, needs a bit of time to round out a bit more - or enjoy with a hearty meal now. YUMMY" Dan Traucki, Wine Assist, Dec 2016
"The distinctive traditional label immediately attracts the eye. The wine, vinfied in Amarone style is densely dark & brooding. The lurking fruit power in the plummy, spicy & mocha spectrum, will slowly uncoil and reward collaring. The 14.7% Alc drives the fruit generosity to a full, porty and smooth long palate finish. This is a robust wine, typical of the region which will suit hearty protein dishes. Cellar: Now to 5 years." The Grape Hunter, Gilbert Labour, Dec 2016
